They also vary between individuals, with some showing absent or reversed asymmetries. Since handedness, at least, tends to run in families, a number of theorists have proposed a single two-allele gene, in which one allele codes for left-cerebral dominance and right-handedness, while the other does not specify asymmetry, leaving the directions of handedness and speech dominance to chance , . Such models can account for parental influences, as well as the positive but weak correlation between handedness and speech dominance, in which some 95–99% of right-handers and 70–80% The brain asymmetry for spatial frequency processing underlies a related asymmetry in processing different components of visual form, with the left versus right hemisphere being specialized for processing local versus global levels of form (e.g., Sergent, 1982a; Van Kleeck, 1989). In a typical local-global stimulus, a large global shape is comprised of smaller local shapes (e.g., a large global letter “H” made up from many smaller local letter “E”s). Furthermore, as demonstrated by Shaw et al.

The hemisphere that is larger, more active, or superior in performance is dominant.

The human brain has an overall leftward posterior and rightward anterior asymmetry (or brain torque). There are particularly large asymmetries in the frontal, temporal and occipital lobes, which increase in asymmetry in the antero-posterior direction beginning at the central region. Cerebral asymmetry emerged against the background of a fundamental bilateral symmetry of brain and body. We belong to the phylum known as the bilateria, an ancient lineage that includes over 1.5 million present-day animal species, including such diverse creatures as soil nematodes, fruit flies, and mammals. Consistent with the thesis of hemispheric independence, brain asymmetry applies to cognition, emotion, and regulation of autonomic physiological processes.

av R Pedersen · 2016 — This study investigates the sensitivity of the anchoring effect in highly right-handed individuals under selective hemispheric activation by hand

Brain asymmetry or cerebral asymmetry refers to anatomical, physiological or behavioral differences between the two cerebral hemispheres. The hemisphere that is larger, more active, or superior in performance is dominant. The scientific study of cerebral dominance is recent and dates back to Paul Broca’s discovery in 1865, based on observing acquired language deficit (aphasia) following left hemisphere (LH) stroke, that the left cerebral hemisphere of right-handed people is dominant for The results of clusters 1 and 3 suggest that the difference in the rate of thinning of the left and right cerebral cortex leads to changes in cortical asymmetry starting around the age of 30, and the changes accelerate around the age of 60, and the thickness of the cerebral cortex on both sides of the cerebral cortex reaches the same around the age of 70. Asymmetry of the human cerebellum was investigated using intrinsic functional connectivity. Regions of functional asymmetry within the cerebellum were identified during resting-state functional MRI ( n = 500 subjects) and replicated in an independent cohort ( n = 500 subjects).
